Quick answer: TNB peak hours under the ToU tariff are 2pm – 10pm, Monday to Friday. Off-peak hours are the rest of the weekday (10pm – 2pm the next day) plus the full 24 hours on weekends and public holidays. This means more than half the week (all weekends + 16 hours of every weekday) is actually the cheaper off-peak period.
Why Did TNB Introduce ToU?
The ToU scheme isn’t just a way for TNB to charge different rates – it’s part of a demand-side management strategy. When more users shift part of their usage to off-peak hours, it helps:
- Reduce pressure on the grid during the country’s highest demand period (evening-early night)
- Avoid the need to build additional generation capacity just to cover a few peak hours a day
- Give a financial incentive to consumers willing to shift their usage pattern
This is the same model used in many developed countries – time-based rates to balance grid load, not just to boost TNB revenue.
TNB Peak Hours & What Is The ToU (Time-of-Use) Tariff?
ToU is an optional (voluntary) tariff scheme from TNB that lets users pay different rates based on time of use – cheaper off-peak, more expensive at peak – compared to the standard tariff, which charges the same rate all day. This scheme is now open to all registered TNB users, including those without a smart meter yet.

Important: The ToU rates above are the Energy Charge only – it replaces the standard Energy Charge (27.03 sen/kWh for <=1,500 kWh, 37.03 sen/kWh for >1,500 kWh). The other components of your bill (Capacity Charge + Network Charge, approx. 17.40 sen/kWh) stay the same whether or not you register for ToU. So the real difference between ToU and the standard tariff is only a few sen per kWh – not as large as it looks when comparing the ToU rate directly against the all-in rate of 44.43/54.43 sen/kWh.
If you work from home or often use air-conditioning in the afternoon (2pm – 10pm), ToU might not be worth it for you – the peak rate is higher than the standard RP4 tariff. ToU works best for households that are empty during daytime working hours.

How To Register For ToU
ToU registration is not automatic – you need to apply separately:
- Visit a nearby Kedai Tenaga TNB
- Email TNB (support@tnb.com.my)
- MyTNB app
You’ll need a copy of the registrant’s IC (or company registration for a business account) and a completed application form. There’s an RM10 stamp duty charge per application. Processing time is around 5 working days if you already have a smart meter, or up to 2 months if you don’t.
TNB Peak Hours: ToU vs Standard Tariff – Which Saves More?
It depends entirely on your usage pattern:
- ToU is worth it if the majority of your electricity usage happens at night/morning/weekends – for example a household empty during work hours (2pm-10pm), or a factory running a night shift.
- ToU is not worth it if you use a lot of electricity during the afternoon-early evening (2-10pm) – for example a household with work-from-home occupants, or a busy retail/restaurant business in the afternoon.

- Electricity still imported for the rest of the time (mainly at night) is charged the cheaper off-peak rate

Practical Tip: When’s The Best Time To Use Heavy Appliances?
If you’ve registered for ToU, try shifting “heavy” appliance use (washing machine, dryer, EV charger, oven) to off-peak hours to maximise savings:
- Best: After 10pm or before 2pm (weekdays), or anytime on weekends
- Avoid: 2pm – 10pm on weekdays – this is when rates are highest
