What Is Solar ATAP?

Malaysia’s official government scheme for installing rooftop solar panels, replacing Net Energy Metering (NEM), which ended on 30 June 2025. Solar ATAP took effect on 1 January 2026.

1. Use Your Own Power FirstElectricity generated by your solar panels is used directly to meet your home or business needs — this offsets the grid electricity that would otherwise cost you the most.
2. Export the SurplusWhen your solar output exceeds what you’re using, the surplus is exported to the TNB grid and earns an “ATAP credit”.
3. TNB Supplies the RestWhen solar isn’t enough (at night or cloudy days), TNB supplies electricity as usual.

Frequently Asked Questions

I already registered for NEM — am I automatically enrolled in Solar ATAP?

Not automatically. NEM has ended, and one of the conditions for Solar ATAP is that the applicant must not currently be registered under NEM/Self-Consumption — you’ll need to check your account status with TNB/your RPVSP first.

How long does Solar ATAP approval take?

It depends on your system’s capacity and voltage — small residential systems (5kW single-phase) are usually faster since they don’t require a full Power System Study.

What is an RPVSP, and why is it mandatory?

Registered PV Service Provider — a solar company certified by SEDA to legitimately manage Solar ATAP applications. You can’t apply on your own without an RPVSP.

Is the RM3,000 rebate automatic, or do I need to apply?

Based on the official announcement, eligible consumers will be contacted by TNB via their registered email — it isn’t self-service, but make sure your TNB email address is up to date.

Why does the export credit expire every month?

This is the key difference from NEM — Solar ATAP doesn’t carry credit balances over to the next month. That’s why getting the system sized correctly (not oversized) matters, so your exported surplus isn’t wasted.

Is Solar ATAP available for businesses/commercial use too?

Yes — non-residential users are eligible for up to 100% Maximum Demand, capped at 1,000kW, subject to technical assessment.
